Detroit fliers heading for California’s capital or northwest Florida’s beaches will have fewer nonstop options for a while. Delta Air Lines is pausing two seasonal nonstop routes out of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport this summer and keeping them on ice into early 2027.
The move cuts direct links between Detroit and both the West Coast and northwest Florida beach country, squeezing options for summer getaways and late winter trips. The changes were announced today.
As reported by the Detroit Free Press, the pauses kick in on June 1. Delta plans to bring back the Detroit–Sacramento (SMF) route in March 2027, while the weekend-only service to Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) is slated to return in summer 2027. According to the Free Press, the two Detroit routes are among seven Delta services nationwide that are getting schedule tweaks this season.
Delta's explanation
“Delta routinely adjusts its network as part of its normal planning process,” the airline told reporters, according to the Detroit Free Press. The carrier said the move stems from operational factors and specifically noted that jet fuel prices were not singled out as the reason for the pause.
Local coverage and industry context
Local TV treated the changes as part of a broader spring shuffle in airline schedules. CBS Detroit aired a brief segment on the cuts, pointing out that the Detroit routes are among a wave of adjustments going into the books for summer 2026 travel across multiple carriers.
What travelers should do
Travelers already booked on the affected flights will want to move fast. Passengers should monitor flight alerts and rebooking options on Delta, and look at alternate routings if they are on a tight schedule.
Delta is still flying a mix of seasonal and year-round routes across Michigan, including service to Grand Rapids, Lansing, Traverse City, Kalamazoo and Muskegon, according to the airline’s route information. So while the Sacramento and Northwest Florida nonstops are on pause, there are still plenty of ways to get around the state and beyond, albeit with a few more connections.
Local context
Detroit Metro remains the region’s main international gateway, and the Wayne County Airport Authority notes that DTW functions as a central hub for much of the area’s connecting traffic. Detroit Metro Airport, located in Romulus, will be the jumping-off point for the revised Delta schedule and any future adjustments tied to the two paused routes.
What to watch next
We will keep an eye on further updates from both the airline and the airport and will share new details if dates or frequencies shift again. Travelers booked on DTW–SMF or DTW–ECP should continue to check official flight status and keep their plans flexible through spring 2027.
