A 29-year-old Denham Springs man died Tuesday afternoon after the SUV he was driving left U.S. Highway 61 and overturned just north of Gramercy. The single-vehicle crash happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. on April 21, and the driver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
According to Louisiana State Police, Troop A investigators identified the driver as 29-year-old Aaron Gremillion of Denham Springs. He was traveling northbound in the left lane of U.S. 61 in a 2013 Cadillac SRX when the vehicle exited the roadway to the left, entered the median and overturned. State police said Gremillion was unrestrained and sustained serious injuries before being transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Local responders, including the St. James Parish Sheriff's Office, worked the crash scene. WBRZ reported that emergency crews found the overturned SUV in the median and transported one person by ambulance to a St. James hospital. A stretch of U.S. 61 was closed for a period while investigators processed the scene.
Investigation and next steps
In a Troop A news release, Louisiana State Police said “impairment is not suspected” in the crash. As is standard procedure, a routine toxicology sample will be obtained and submitted for analysis. Troopers said the crash remains under investigation as they continue to examine the scene to determine how the Cadillac left the roadway.
Safety reminder
State police used the incident as a reminder for drivers and passengers to wear seat belts every time they get into a vehicle, noting that proper restraint use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Authorities also asked anyone who may have information or video related to the collision to contact investigators as the inquiry continues.
