After months of permit drama and neighborhood debate, Diaspora MKE, a planned sports bar and lounge in Riverwest, is finally ready for its big moment. The bar is set to hold its grand opening on Tuesday, April 14, Milwaukee Day, inside the former Company Brewing space at 735 E. Center St. Owners say the new late-night spot will blend wall-to-wall televised sports with food, music and community-focused gatherings deep into the night.
According to Milwaukee Record, the April 14 date appeared on the business’s Facebook event as a deliberate 414 Day celebration. The outlet reports that the event description invites guests to “cut the ribbon, raise a glass, and welcome a new space built for connection, culture, and community.” That invite followed a winter of amended applications and neighborhood meetings that kept the project in regulatory limbo.
Licenses committee cleared the way after ownership change
The City Licenses Committee gave Diaspora MKE a crucial green light on Jan. 27, recommending approval of its food and beverage license after the applicants revised their paperwork to remove an owner who works for the Milwaukee Police Department, WTMJ reported. Committee members also asked the group to hold off on a full public entertainment license at first and to rely on event permits instead, while a Good Neighbor Agreement was added to the official record. With those conditions in place, the committee sent the license file on to the full Common Council for final action.
Owner ties and a past brawl shadow the project
Not everyone in the neighborhood has been enthusiastic. Residents raised flags over co-owner Marvin Bailey’s previous venture, Flame 13, which Urban Milwaukee reports was linked to a large brawl in July 2025 and later faced a nonrenewal recommendation from the licenses committee in September 2025. Opponents at recent hearings argued that Diaspora MKE could repeat those issues, while supporters and some community leaders urged a fresh start and pointed to new operational safeguards. Questions about ownership and public safety sat at the center of the licensing debate.
From brewery to sports bar
The Riverwest property has long been a familiar nightlife address, with various breweries and bars cycling through the building over the years. Company Brewing, the most recent tenant, shut its doors abruptly in May 2024 after nine years at 735 E. Center St., according to Milwaukee Record. Diaspora MKE’s organizers have described their concept on social media as a destination for good music, food and “elevated conversation,” with plans to create a neighborhood hangout that marries game-day viewing with a broader slate of nightlife offerings.
Timing: It’s Milwaukee Day
The choice of April 14 is no accident. The date, written as 4/14, is celebrated locally as Milwaukee Day (also known as 414 Day), a civic holiday tied to the city’s 414 area code, according to the official Milwaukee Day site. Each year, the day brings citywide specials, festivals and museum discounts, making it prime time for a splashy opening. For Diaspora MKE, launching on a built-in celebration night is a calculated way to introduce itself to the neighborhood crowd.
What to expect and next steps
Urban Milwaukee reported that Diaspora MKE plans to feature up to 20 televisions tuned to sports, along with food, alcoholic beverages, cigars and hookah as part of the overall operation. The Licenses Committee’s recommendation moved to the full Common Council and was officially recorded as approved on Feb. 10 in the City of Milwaukee’s legislative record. With doors set to open on April 14, neighbors and city officials alike have signaled they will be closely watching the early months for noise levels, crowd control and adherence to the conditions placed on the bar.
