A 9-year-old was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital on Wednesday after a dog attack in Englewood that drew a multi-agency emergency response. Fire and EMS crews cleared a landing zone at the scene so an air ambulance could get in and fly the child to Tampa for further care.
Local crews led the on-scene response
The Englewood Area Fire Control District, which serves Englewood, responded along with Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies and Charlotte County Fire & EMS Rescue 13. The district notes on its site that its crews routinely coordinate with county partners on medical flights and large rescues, the same roles they filled during Wednesday's call.
Aeromed 5 transported the child to Tampa General
According to WFLA, first responders secured the area for a medical helicopter, and Aeromed 5 flew the child to Tampa General Hospital. WFLA's report, which includes photos credited to the Englewood Area Fire Control District, notes that Captain Jacobs led a brief prayer with the child's mother and the flight crew before takeoff. Officials have not disclosed the child's condition.
Dog-bite risks and safety steps
Dog bites send hundreds of thousands of people to emergency rooms every year, and children are hit especially hard, according to federal public health guidance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends closely supervising young children around dogs, avoiding rough or sudden play, and getting prompt medical care for any bite that breaks the skin.
Where to report a bite and where to get help
For bites in Charlotte County, the Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County advises reporting incidents to local animal control. The agency provides an animal bite report form and rabies guidance on its website. The child in Wednesday's case was flown to Tampa General Hospital; contact and location details are available through Tampa General Hospital and the county health page at the Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County.
Authorities have not released additional information about the child's condition or the ownership of the dog involved. Media images and the initial account were circulated to local outlets and are summarized by WFLA.
