A 33-year-old former substitute teacher in Colorado Springs is facing a stack of felony charges after investigators say he had an unlawful relationship with a student at a Widefield School District charter school. Authorities allege multiple counts of sexual misconduct involving a minor, tied to both in-person encounters and electronic communications. The suspect, identified by law enforcement as William Boden, is now moving through the El Paso County court system. School officials say they are cooperating with investigators.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, detectives with the Special Victims Unit opened the investigation on Jan. 5 and identified 33-year-old William Boden as the suspect after conducting multiple interviews and collecting evidence. The sheriff's release states that Boden was arrested on Feb. 19 and booked on several felony counts, including sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, sexual exploitation of a child, internet sexual exploitation of a child and unlawful electronic sexual communication.
Sheriff Joseph Roybal said in the release that the case reflects the office's “unwavering commitment to protecting children and pursuing justice for victims,” adding that investigators will continue working to ensure “anyone who exploits or harms a child is held fully accountable.” The release notes that Boden was released on a $25,000 bond on March 20 and that the investigation remains active.
Investigation Timeline and Court Steps
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that Boden worked at James Madison Charter Academy from Oct. 31, 2022, through Jan. 2024. Court records cited by local outlets show an arraignment scheduled for Thursday, April 16, as the El Paso County legal process moves ahead. In keeping with state law, officials have not released identifying information about the minor victim.
School Response and Community Impact
James Madison Charter Academy told reporters it is cooperating with investigators, according to coverage by AOL. The school and Widefield School District 3 have declined to comment further while detectives continue their work, leaving families to follow the case through official updates and local media reports.
How to Provide Tips or Get Support
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information, or anyone who believes they may be a victim, to contact EPSO at 719-390-5555, a reporting line noted by KKTV. Victims and families can also turn to local victim-advocate services for support while the investigation and any upcoming court proceedings move forward.
Legal Context
The allegations remain just that at this stage, and Boden is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. If the case proceeds to trial, Colorado statutes allow for significant penalties in sex-crime cases involving minors and for unlawful electronic communications by people in positions of trust. The legal path typically includes arraignment, pretrial hearings and, if necessary, a trial. The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing as detectives continue to develop evidence and interview potential witnesses.
