The Seven, a new 21,000-square-foot event venue in Ferndale, is set to open today, promising a design-forward layout and a chef-driven dining program for weddings, corporate shows and large private events. The owners are pitching it as downtown-level production and hospitality without downtown pricing, with substantial bars, a visible show kitchen and multiple private rooms meant to feel more like a night out than a generic banquet hall.

Developer Tom Violante Jr. and restaurateur Patrick VanLehn put more than $8 million into converting the building at 915 E. Drayton St. into The Seven, according to Detroit.co. They paid roughly $2 million for the property, then spent "several multiples" of that on an 18-month renovation that brought in Krieger Klatt Architects and Studio H2G for design work. Detroit.co describes the move as a bet on Ferndale’s growing commercial corridor and on strong demand for production-heavy events outside downtown Detroit.

Chef-Driven Food Program

Food is the main hook at The Seven. The floor plan includes a visible, 300-square-foot show kitchen backed by a 3,000-square-foot main kitchen, with chef Matt Barnes at the helm. Barnes previously worked at Vertical Detroit and the London Chop House, as reported by Crain's Detroit Business. The venue’s own site says it is built around vibrant culinary moments and curated bars, according to The Seven. Altogether, the setup is designed to offer restaurant-style service within a flexible event space rather than a traditional banquet model.

Production Specs And Capacity

The Seven’s footprint includes two large lounge bars, Seven Bar and Lounge and the Point Bar and Lounge, each about 2,500 square feet, along with a 2,500-square-foot outdoor patio, private salon suites and a Founders Lounge, per Detroit.co. Seated capacity comes in at roughly 250, with standing receptions up to 375. The build also features 90 multi-zoned speakers and a 20-by-10-foot LED wall for custom visual production. Drive-in access for vehicles or oversized gear is part of the package, a detail clearly aimed at car reveals and corporate activations around Metro Detroit.

Why Ferndale?

Ferndale has been pushing a walkable downtown and retail corridor, and city materials emphasize support for local businesses and development in the area, according to the City of Ferndale. The Seven’s website is already promoting tours, bookings and local hiring ahead of opening, according to The Seven. How residents respond to the new higher-end option will likely depend on how its event calendar fills out and whether the venue can balance neighborhood character with regional demand.

The Seven opens today at 915 E. Drayton and is taking bookings through 2026 as it builds out its schedule. For Ferndale, it brings a fresh destination for larger, chef-forward events and an early test of how many suburban clients are ready to skip the trip downtown.
