A 26-year-old Garland man is facing a murder charge after a woman was found shot inside a home late Saturday night, according to police. Officers responding to a domestic disturbance call discovered the woman unresponsive in a bedroom and rushed her to a hospital, where she later died. The suspect is being held at the Garland Detention Center while detectives continue to piece together what happened.
What police say
Police say officers were called around 11:45 p.m. to a home in the 800 block of Rosewood Hills Drive, where they found the woman with an apparent gunshot wound, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. Investigators identified the suspect as 26-year-old Herman Resendiz-Velez, who lived at the home, and allege he shot the woman during an altercation. The victim’s name has not been released as authorities work to notify her family, and police say the investigation remains active.
Domestic violence context in Texas
Authorities say this deadly encounter is part of a broader and deeply troubling statewide pattern. The Texas Council on Family Violence documented 161 domestic-violence deaths in 2024, and earlier counts showed even higher totals in 2023, with firearms listed as the leading cause of those deaths. Experts warn that when a gun is present in a volatile relationship, the odds of a lethal outcome go up sharply, according to data from the Texas Council on Family Violence.
Investigation and legal process
Garland police say Resendiz-Velez was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder, and no bond has been set. He remains held at the Garland Detention Center while prosecutors and investigators review physical evidence and witness statements as the case moves through the courts, according to FOX 4. As with any criminal case, the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in a court of law.
