Gig Harbor's two new lit synthetic turf fields, built by the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, quietly flipped the switch this week and are already taking reservations for practices, tournaments and drop‑in play. The twin fields sit just north of the Tom Taylor Family YMCA and will be open to the public whenever they are not reserved.
Phase 1A of the Gig Harbor Sports Complex, the fields hosted their first teams last Monday, according to The News Tribune. Under the development lease, the Tom Taylor Family YMCA will operate and maintain the site, handling both community use and league bookings.
The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties lists operating hours for the fields as 7 a.m.–10 p.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sundays, and notes that the public can use the turf during non‑reserved times. Teams can apply for quarterly booking windows, and the Y posts seasonal application deadlines along with a public calendar so people can see what is open. Hourly rates and amenity fees are also posted on the booking portal for anyone pricing out field time.
What’s on site
Both turf rectangles are striped for soccer, football, lacrosse and T‑ball and are lit with directional LED fixtures designed to cut down on neighborhood glare. The complex is next to Doris Heritage Park and includes roughly 100 dedicated parking stalls, along with shared restrooms and a concessions building. Community fundraising, backed by a city contribution, covered most construction costs, the Y reports in a press release shared via PRWeb.
How to reserve and who gets priority
All reservations run through the YMCA. Non‑profit youth organizations in the greater Gig Harbor area receive first crack at quarterly slots, followed by local adult non‑profits and nearby nonprofit groups. Commercial renters can still get time on the turf, although they pay higher rates.
The Y's online calendar lists application windows for Spring/Summer, Fall and Winter seasons, and notes that groups are placed on the schedule 10–14 days after each application period closes. Anyone interested can check availability and apply through the Y's booking portal or email [email protected] for help.
Next phases and city funding
The two playing fields make up Phase 1A of a multi‑phase sports complex. Phase 1B (Doris Heritage Park) opened in June 2025 and adds courts, playground space and an event lawn, according to the City of Gig Harbor. The city has not yet committed funds for Phases 2 and 3, and city parks manager Jennifer Haro told The News Tribune that a funding recommendation for additional work is expected to be considered in the 2027–2028 budget cycle. City planning documents outline possible layouts for future fields and parking as the project moves ahead.
A grand‑opening celebration is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, April 24 and will feature remarks, family activities and a drone show by the Peninsula School District team, according to Gig Harbor Now. Several local clubs have already locked in spring quarter slots, and there are still additional times listed on the Y's booking calendar.
