South City just got a lot sweeter. Gooey Louie, the St. Louis bakery known for gooey butter cake, has returned to Chippewa Street with a new storefront right next to Ted Drewes. Owner Debbie Stieferman is back to selling scratch-made gooey butter cakes in individual sizes and larger pans for take-home orders, bringing one of the city's signature sugar bombs home to its old stomping grounds.
According to the St. Louis Post‑Dispatch, the Chippewa shop opened this spring, with the paper's photos showing Stieferman at the counter and Ted Drewes frozen custard visible in the background. The Post‑Dispatch reports that the cakes are baked from scratch on-site and sold as both single servings and full-size cakes.
Location and hours
Gooey Louie lists its St. Louis City location at 6736 Chippewa Street, immediately adjacent to the Ted Drewes stand, and describes the storefront as in a "soft butter" opening phase with regular hours to be posted soon, per Gooey Louie. The bakery also lists pickup shops in Creve Coeur and Kirkwood for orders and custom cakes.
What’s on the menu
The shop's menu sticks to the hits while having a little fun with the names. There is the classic Original gooey butter cake alongside playful spins such as Chocolate Chippewa and Devil's Food, with individual "Baby Louie" servings and seasonal specials in the mix, according to SinglePlatform. Many of the flavor names nod to local landmarks and inside jokes that longtime customers have come to expect from the bakery's rotating lineup.
A homecoming for a local icon
Gooey Louie has deep roots on Chippewa. Stieferman first sold her cakes on the strip beginning in 2007 before the business relocated in 2020, later opening a shop on Olive in 2022. That history, highlighted in coverage of the bakery's expansion, helps explain why coming back to Chippewa hits a sentimental note for neighborhood regulars, per St. Louis Magazine.
Why it matters
The gooey butter cake is a St. Louis original and a staple at local gatherings, with food writers calling the style a regional specialty rooted deeply in the city's baking traditions, according to Fodor's. Gooey Louie's return to Chippewa reunites a hometown favorite with the Route 66 strip, and the bakery also offers nationwide shipping and local pickup options through its site, per Gooey Louie.
