A brush fire in Myakka City sent residents scrambling from several homes Tuesday after flames flared up near Gopher Hill Road. The blaze moved through scattered ranch-style neighborhoods in eastern Manatee County, pushing people to nearby safe zones while firefighters rushed to build control lines. By late afternoon, crews reported the fire was roughly 95 percent contained, and personnel remained on scene for mop-up.
Containment and response
As reported by WTSP, East Manatee Fire Rescue said the fire started sometime Tuesday in the area of Gopher Hill Road, and Florida Forest Service crews joined the response. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office evacuated several nearby homes and worked with local fire agencies to keep residents out of the immediate area. With winds easing, crews dug containment lines and focused on keeping the blaze away from structures.
Local conditions and risk
Manatee County has highlighted an elevated wildfire risk in recent months and imposed burn restrictions, including a burn ban that went into effect last November. According to Manatee County, officials have urged residents to respect burn bans and call 911 to report smoke or uncontrolled fires. Local fire officials note that dry fuels and breezy conditions in this part of the county can cause even small yard fires to spread quickly.
What residents need to know
People in the affected area are urged to follow evacuation instructions from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and East Manatee Fire Rescue and to stay away from the scene so emergency vehicles can move freely. Those displaced have been advised to check local shelter information and sign up for county emergency alerts for updates on when it is safe to return. Residents with respiratory issues should limit time outdoors while smoke lingers in nearby neighborhoods.
