A police pursuit that crossed the Dearborn–Melvindale line ended in tragedy last Friday when a woman died following a crash near Greenfield Road and Rotunda Drive, and a man was taken into custody. Melvindale officers say the chase began after an officer tried to stop a vehicle, and both people inside were detained at the scene. The female passenger later died, while the male driver was hospitalized after the collision before being released into law enforcement custody.
Police Say Warrant Alert Sparked Pursuit
According to Melvindale police, the incident started when the Michigan Department of Corrections alerted them about a driver wanted on a warrant. An officer then reported spotting a vehicle that may have been stolen, and the driver allegedly took off instead of pulling over. The vehicle ultimately crashed near Greenfield and Rotunda, and officers arrested both the male driver and female passenger at the scene, CBS News Detroit reported. Police have not released the ages of those involved.
Brief Standoff Before Arrest Near Crash Site
Local TV footage captured the tense aftermath, showing officers swarming the intersection and closing in on a man near the wreckage. Reporters on scene described a brief standoff before the arrest. FOX 2 Detroit shared a video that appeared to show the suspect briefly barricaded in an SUV before officers moved in and took him into custody.
Passenger Dies, Driver Handed to Law Enforcement
Melvindale Police Chief Chris Egan told CBS News Detroit that the female passenger died following the crash. He said the male driver was transported to a hospital after the collision and was later released into law enforcement custody. Officials have not yet said what, if any, charges the driver might face. CBS reported it has asked the department for additional information.
Investigation Still Active
Investigators with the Melvindale Police Department spent Friday processing the scene and working with neighboring agencies to sort out the sequence of events, according to local reporting. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have so far shared only limited details while they continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
