A quiet stretch of rural Catawba turned into a crime scene Saturday night when a person was struck by gunfire near the intersection of Hall Spencer Road and Cureton Ferry Road in York County. Deputies say the shooting happened at about 10:20 p.m., and neighbors told investigators they saw no vehicles in the area as the suspect or suspects took off on foot.
The York County Sheriff's Office went public with the case on Monday evening, posting an alert on X and asking for the community's help. According to a post from York County Sheriff's Office, investigators want anyone with information or camera footage to contact the sheriff’s office and reminded residents that "Page not monitored 24/7. For emergencies call 9-1-1."
Where it happened
Catawba is an unincorporated riverside community southeast of Rock Hill, and county maps show Hall Spencer and Cureton Ferry running through a patchwork of homes, small farms and wooded lots. That kind of spread-out, rural layout can complicate searches and witness canvassing. The roads appear on mapping documents from York County Government and local guides.
What officials are asking
Investigators are urging anyone with dash-cam, doorbell or home-security footage from the Hall Spencer/Cureton Ferry area around the time of the shooting to come forward. In a post on X, the York County Sheriff's Office said the suspect or suspects were believed to have fled on foot and asked residents to share tips directly with the office.
Investigation status
The sheriff’s office wrote that "a victim was hit by a bullet," but it has not released the person's condition or identity. Neighbors told deputies they saw no vehicles in the area, and deputies say they believe the suspect or suspects ran away. Investigators are still working the case and are asking anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
Anyone with tips or footage is asked to reach out to the York County Sheriff's Office, and callers are reminded to dial 9-1-1 for immediate emergencies. Officials say they will release additional details as the investigation develops.
