It was still dark on Ninth Avenue when a deadly knife attack ripped through the quiet outside a Midtown shelter early Thursday, leaving one man dead and another clinging to stability in a hospital bed.
Police say two men in their 30s were stabbed just after 4:45 a.m. outside a drop-in site in Hell's Kitchen, in front of a facility that serves some of the neighborhood's most vulnerable residents.
Scene And Suspect
The victims were found outside Urban Pathways on Ninth Avenue shortly after 4:45 a.m. One man had been stabbed multiple times in the torso and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to ABC7 New York. The second man suffered multiple abdominal wounds and was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Investigators say the attacker took off south on Ninth Avenue on a bicycle, wearing a blue jacket and blue pants. Police had made no arrests in the immediate aftermath, according to ABC7 New York.
About Urban Pathways
Urban Pathways operates outreach, drop-in services and supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness in Midtown, according to Manhattan Community Board 4. Its programs offer daytime services and case management used by people living on the street and in shelters throughout the neighborhood, making Thursday's violence feel particularly jarring outside a site meant to be a lifeline.
Investigation And Recent Violence
The NYPD is investigating the double stabbing and has not released a possible motive. No arrests had been reported when the incident was covered by ABC7 New York.
The killing adds another violent episode to Hell's Kitchen this year. In January, a man was stabbed multiple times in the neighborhood and the suspect remained at large, as reported in Man Stabbed Multiple Times.
