Henderson is set to start routing some 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline calls straight to its clinician-led Crisis Response Team later in 2026, city officials said, making it the first city in Nevada picked for a pilot that links 988 directly to an on-the-ground mobile unit. Instead of automatically sending police, 988 counselors will be able to dispatch licensed clinicians and peer recovery specialists for in-person help. Officials say the shift is designed to get the right kind of support to people in crisis faster while easing the load on 911 and other emergency resources.
Henderson Tapped For 988 Dispatch Pilot
The pilot was outlined at a recent City Council meeting and reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which noted that the city plans to begin dispatching its Crisis Response Team through 988 later in 2026. The City of Henderson also confirmed the program on its official City of Henderson LinkedIn, describing the effort as a partnership with the State of Nevada and Carelon Behavioral Health.
How The Team Works On The Street
Henderson's team - a mix of licensed clinicians, navigators and peer recovery specialists who work alongside police - launched in mid-2025 and has already handled more than 100 referrals, according to local reporting. KTNV reports that the mobile crisis crews follow up on behavioral-health 911 and 311 calls, conduct screenings, help de-escalate tense situations and connect residents with treatment, housing and social services in an effort to break the cycle of repeat emergencies.
State Rules And 988 Capacity
Nevada is in the process of writing regulations to formally certify mobile crisis teams so they can be dispatched directly from 988. Planning documents from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health say those rules are tentatively expected to take effect in 2027. The move is part of a broader buildout of the state's crisis system: a southern Nevada 988 call center operated by Carelon began taking calls in July 2025, a Clark County report notes, keeping more calls and chats in-state so they can be routed to local resources.
Why City Leaders Say It Matters
City officials argue that a 988-to-mobile-team model reduces pressure on emergency services and avoids turning mental-health crises into criminal matters, according to Neighborhood Services director Hayley Jarolimek. Between July and December, the city logged roughly 1,700 behavioral-health-related calls, a figure cited by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Leaders say being able to send clinicians directly from 988 should improve follow-up, connect more people to long-term support and cut down on repeat crises.
How To Get Help
If you or someone you know is in crisis, you can call or text 988 at any time to reach trained crisis counselors. Crisis Support Services of Nevada operates a statewide crisis contact center and explains how 988 routes callers and links them with local services. City officials say tying Henderson's Crisis Response Team into that system will add an in-person option for residents who need it, while 988 centers continue to provide phone, text and chat support across the state.
