In a world of stubbornly high food costs, Henderson diners are getting a rare bit of good news. DoorDash’s latest quarterly snapshot ranks the city among the country’s most affordable places to eat, thanks to slower price growth at local restaurants compared with the rest of the nation. The company’s State of Local Commerce update pulls from millions of transactions to track price shifts at restaurants, grocery stores and for everyday goods. In Henderson, the numbers show restaurant prices creeping up far less than the national average, which means budget-minded locals have a little more room to maneuver when they eat out.
As reported by the Las Vegas Sun, DoorDash’s Q1 update tags Henderson as one of the more affordable markets for restaurant prices, with local menus up about 1.7% year over year. The Sun notes that the rankings span 100 metro areas, putting Henderson in relatively rare company for holding the line on restaurant inflation.
Nationally, DoorDash’s Restaurant Price Index climbed about 3.2% year over year, according to DoorDash. By comparison, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ "food away from home" Consumer Price Index rose 3.9% over the same period, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. DoorDash says its quarterly update is meant to complement traditional government data with a more frequent, ground-level read on what people are actually paying.
Breakfast basics fell as egg prices plunged
Not everything on the menu is getting pricier. DoorDash’s Breakfast Basics Index, which is a small basket that includes eggs, milk, a bagel and an avocado, fell 22.3% year over year, largely because egg prices dropped sharply, according to Supermarket News. That steep decline has helped bring down the cost of quick, at-home breakfasts even as restaurant tabs continue to inch up in many markets.
What it means for diners and local restaurants
"This data reflects what people are actually buying day to day," DoorDash Chief Analytics Officer Jessica Lachs said in the company’s release, as noted by Supermarket News. For Henderson restaurants, slower menu inflation can help keep customers coming through the door at quick-service counters and neighborhood spots, even if owners are still wrestling with wages, rent and supply costs that a narrow basket of prices does not fully capture.
DoorDash’s city-level snapshot gives residents and local operators a closer, more frequent look at where prices are cooling off and where they are stubbornly holding. For the full city rankings and tables, see DoorDash.
