What started as a high-speed passing attempt on a busy stretch of U.S. 301 in Riverview turned deadly Friday evening when a 31-year-old Apollo Beach man was ejected from his BMW and killed, according to state troopers.

The crash happened on northbound U.S. 301 just north of Shady Preserve Drive. Investigators say the BMW was trying to pass a Ford Escape when it slammed into the back of the SUV. The impact sent the BMW into the center median, where it overturned multiple times. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ford Escape, driven by a 40-year-old Riverview man, spun across the travel lanes but the driver reported no injuries. Northbound lanes were shut down for hours while crews documented the scene and cleared the wreckage.

Troopers' preliminary account

In a statement to the Tampa Free Press, the Florida Highway Patrol said the BMW's driver attempted to overtake the Ford Escape in the northbound lanes just past Shady Preserve Drive. As the BMW moved to pass, it struck the rear of the Escape, sending the SUV spinning across multiple lanes.

Troopers said the BMW then veered into the center median and rolled several times. The driver was ejected during the rollover sequence and died at the scene. No additional identifying details have been released as the investigation remains active.

Seat belts, rollovers and ejection risk

Rollover crashes are notoriously unforgiving, and being thrown from a vehicle sharply increases the odds that a crash will turn fatal. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that lap-and-shoulder seat belts can cut the risk of fatal injury to front-seat occupants by about 45 percent, in part by keeping people inside the vehicle during violent impacts.

A peer-reviewed analysis of rollover crashes published through the National Library of Medicine found that nonuse of restraints and roof intrusion are major factors in ejection and severe injury. The review highlights how a routine maneuver like passing on a highway can turn catastrophic the moment a vehicle starts to roll.

Investigation continues

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the names of those involved, and troopers say the case is still under investigation. According to the Tampa Free Press, portions of northbound U.S. 301 remained closed for several hours Friday night while troopers reconstructed the crash and crews removed debris from the roadway.
