An early-morning pursuit by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents spilled into Medway on Wednesday, ending with a white van crashed off Fisher Street and its two occupants sprinting away while the vehicle was still rolling, according to local police. Medway authorities said the van left the roadway near high-tension power lines after crossing in from nearby Milford, and that no injuries were reported and neither person had been taken into custody, as reported by The Boston Globe.
Police Chief: Pursuit Started On Route 109 In Milford
Medway Police Chief William Kingsbury wrote that ICE agents first tried to pull over the white van on Route 109 in Milford shortly before 8 a.m., according to The Boston Globe. He said the van “fled, struck an agent-occupied vehicle, and continued eastbound into Medway via West Street before turning onto Fisher Street.”
Witness Calls, Screeching Tires And A Shut-Down Street
Multiple callers reported unmarked law-enforcement vehicles moving at a high rate of speed, and one person reported seeing a van crash on Fisher Street, Boston 25 News reported. According to the outlet, the lower portion of Fisher Street was temporarily closed while crews worked the scene, and the van was removed and the roadway later reopened.
ICE Agents Search On Foot But Come Up Empty
CBS Boston reported that ICE agents chased the two people on foot and searched the area using vehicles, but neither occupant was taken into custody. Medway police, the station noted, stressed that they were not part of the immigration enforcement operation, limiting their involvement to traffic control and helping ensure the van was safely removed.
Medway Stresses Limited Role As Feds Stay Quiet
Chief Kingsbury reiterated that Medway’s role was confined to managing traffic and scene safety, according to The Boston Globe. The paper reported that it had reached out to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for more information and had not yet received a response.
What Comes Next
Local officials said they plan to release more details as they become available. Fisher Street has reopened and the crashed van was towed from the area, authorities said, according to Boston 25 News.
