A late-night drive in Cascade Township ended in tragedy yesterday when a 46-year-old local man died after his car left the roadway, slammed into a tree and erupted in flames. Deputies and Cascade Township firefighters arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Dispatchers said an iPhone's automatic crash notification alerted 911 before shaken bystanders started calling in.
According to MLive, the crash happened about 9:45 p.m. near Buttrick Avenue SE and Ashwood Drive in Cascade Township. Multiple 911 callers reported the car striking a tree and catching fire, and emergency crews worked through the night to secure the scene. Kent County Sheriff's deputies said the agency's traffic safety unit is investigating the cause of the single-vehicle wreck.
Investigation underway
Deputies and fire crews confirmed they arrived to find the vehicle ablaze and pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Dispatchers had already been tipped off by an automatic crash notification sent from the iPhone, according to AOL. Deputies and Cascade Township firefighters remained at the site while investigators processed the wreckage.
Context: enforcement and crash trends
The wreck comes as Michigan agencies are stepping up distracted-driving enforcement during April's Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a statewide campaign described by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. State data cited by OHSP show a decline in distraction-involved crashes from 2023 to 2024 but an increase in fatalities tied to distracted driving, which safety officials say is worrying. That emphasis means investigators often check for cellphone use, impairment and roadway conditions after nighttime single-vehicle crashes.
The Kent County Sheriff's traffic safety unit continues to investigate, and officials have not released the victim's name, per MLive. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the sheriff's office, officials said. Our thoughts are with the family and neighbors affected by this loss, and this report will be updated if more details are released.
