A day of bodysurfing at one of Kona’s most popular coves ended in tragedy Wednesday, when 76-year-old Daniel Vasquez of Kailua-Kona died after being pulled from the water at Kahaluu Beach Park. Emergency crews and lifeguards rushed to the scene, and Vasquez was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Rescue, Hospital And Investigation
According to Honolulu Star-Advertiser, lifeguards and bystanders pulled Vasquez to shore and began CPR. Responders used an AED, and the Hawaii Fire Department transported him to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have opened a coroner’s inquest and ordered an autopsy, and investigators told the paper that no foul play is suspected. The report says anyone with information should contact Kona patrol Officer Marquis Hall at (808) 935-3311 or [email protected].
Spot Under Strain
Kahaluu Beach Park, a popular snorkeling and bodysurfing cove on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona, is also set to close May 1–10 for cauliflower coral spawning, a reminder of how heavily used and ecologically sensitive the area is, according to Hawaii News Now. That mix of heavy visitation and ecological management helps explain why fatalities at island beaches often draw rapid emergency responses and local attention.
Wider Drowning Concerns
The death comes amid renewed focus on drowning prevention across Hawaiʻi after reporting and advocacy pushed state officials to revive a Beach and Water Safety Task Force. Civil Beat found roughly 800 drownings in the last decade and has urged more signage, lifeguards and public education. Advocates say the mix of popular shorelines and variable ocean conditions makes prevention and timely rescue resources especially important for both residents and visitors.
