Largo Fire Rescue crews moved quickly Thursday to corral a brush fire flaring up near the intersection of Ulmerton Road and Wild Acres Road in Largo. Drivers could see smoke rising above the roadway as firefighters worked along the shoulder to knock down flames and keep them from creeping into nearby vegetation.
On-scene response
Video from the area shows multiple fire units and brush trucks stretched along the roadside as crews chased down hotspots and soaked the ground around them. According to WTSP, Largo Fire Rescue responded to the scene at Ulmerton Road and Wild Acres Road in Pinellas County. The outlet did not immediately report any injuries or provide information on what sparked the fire.
Why fire risk is high right now
The roadside scare comes as state officials warn that spring has left Florida’s landscape unusually primed to burn. The Florida Forest Service reports that recent freezes and ongoing drought have dried out vegetation to the point that quick bursts of rain are not enough to lower the danger. More than 1,500 fires have been recorded since Jan. 1 of this year, according to WUSF. “It is very important to not underestimate Florida wildfire season,” Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson told the outlet.
How local response works and what residents should do
According to Pinellas County’s fire administration information, local departments rely on automatic-aid agreements so that the closest available units roll first when a fire call comes in. That setup helps move help into place quickly during fast-moving brush incidents like the one along Ulmerton. Nearby Hillsborough County has kept an emergency ban on open burning in place because of the dry stretch, a reminder that the risk is regional, based on county announcements. Officials urge residents to call 911 if they see smoke or an uncontrolled fire and to hold off on any outdoor burning until local authorities say conditions have improved.
