An Ashtabula County homeowner got an unexpected late-night nature show on Saturday when surveillance cameras picked up multiple black bears casually roaming through his yard. The animals lingered around trees and lawn fixtures, sniffing and exploring but staying calm, a now-familiar scene as black bear reports keep climbing across northeast Ohio.
The homeowner shared the footage with FOX 8 Cleveland, which posted the clip and reported the sighting on April 26, 2026. The station's video shows several dark shapes moving through the grass near a fence before slipping quietly back into the treeline. No injuries or property damage were reported.
Bears Becoming More Common In Northeast Ohio
Wildlife researchers say northeast Ohio, particularly Ashtabula and nearby counties, consistently sees more bear reports than other parts of the state. As Spectrum News 1 reported, that pattern has intensified as black bears recolonize habitat from neighboring states and biologists have started GPS-collaring animals in the region to better track their movements and reproduction. With sightings on the rise, officials are leaning more on public reporting and straightforward prevention steps.
What Officials Recommend
According to the ODNR Division of Wildlife, many human-bear conflicts can be avoided with some basic housekeeping: remove bird feeders, secure trash and pet food, clean grills after use, and consider electric fencing for beehives. The agency also urges residents to report sightings through wildohio.gov or the HuntFish OH app so biologists can confirm what people are seeing and respond if an animal starts causing damage.
Anyone who captures a bear on a trail camera or phone is advised to keep a safe distance and share the footage with local wildlife officials for verification. The Ashtabula homeowner's video is the latest reminder that black bears are now part of the northeastern Ohio spring landscape, and that a few simple precautions can go a long way toward reducing close encounters.
