A late night boom rattled a normally quiet stretch near West Kirsch Road and Springvalley Road in unincorporated Madison County on Sunday, as neighbors reported a loud explosion and saw flames shooting from a home. Troy Fire Department crews arrived just after 11 p.m. to find the house fully involved, officials said. One person suffering from burns was pulled from the scene, taken to a local hospital, then airlifted to St. Louis for more advanced care.
Multi-agency response stretched resources
This was not a small callout. Firefighters from Maryville and O'Fallon joined Troy crews along with several other districts to knock down the blaze, with multiple ambulances staged nearby because early reports did not make clear how many people might be hurt, according to RiverBender. Madison County Emergency Management sent its rehab unit to support responders and deployed a drone team over the scene, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal was called in as the operation unfolded.
One person flown to St. Louis
Crews ultimately located one burn victim, who was taken first to a nearby hospital and later transported by medical helicopter to St. Louis for specialized treatment, according to KSDK. Officials have not released the person’s identity or given any update on their condition.
Cause remains under investigation
Authorities have not said whether anyone else was inside the home when the explosion happened or what might have sparked it, as reported by RiverBender. With the Illinois State Fire Marshal on scene, investigators are expected to conduct a broader probe while firefighters finish overhaul work on what is left of the structure.
Neighbors reported a loud boom
People living nearby told dispatchers they heard a loud boom and saw heavy smoke and flames pouring from the house before first responders arrived, according to KSDK. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Troy Police and Illinois State Police shut down roads in the area so fire crews and medical aircraft could move in and out safely.
