An electric bicycle exploded inside a Kingsford home yesterday, igniting a structure fire that killed one person and left several pets dead, officials said. Two other occupants escaped before fire crews got the flames under control. Investigators have called in the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal to help determine what caused the battery to fail.
Police were dispatched around 11:21 p.m. to the 100 block of Balsam Street, where they arrived to find an active structure fire and an occupant trapped inside who was later pronounced dead, according to CBS Detroit. Two other residents made it out safely, and authorities are withholding the victim’s name while the investigation continues, the outlet reported.
What Officials Reported From The Scene
Kingsford Public Safety said in a Facebook news release that the blast came from an electric bicycle inside the residence and that several pets were found dead in the home, according to WLUC‑TV. The department said crews from neighboring agencies and local utilities assisted at the scene and that the investigation remains ongoing.
How This Fits Into A Wider Trend
Battery‑related fires tied to e‑bikes and other devices have prompted both federal warnings and local crackdowns. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission last year warned consumers to stop using certain e‑bike batteries linked to fires, according to the CPSC. Cities such as New York have launched trade‑in and education programs to get unsafe batteries out of circulation, per the NYC Mayor’s Office.
Fire‑Safety Advice
Fire officials say the basics still count. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage, charge only on a hard surface away from doors or other exits, and never leave batteries unattended while they are plugged in. Damaged or recalled batteries should be taken to a hazardous‑waste site for proper recycling.
Guidance from the FDNY also stresses buying UL‑listed batteries and keeping charged devices out of bedrooms, since battery fires can flare up even when units are not plugged in, according to FDNY Smart.
Kingsford Public Safety said the probe remains active and asked anyone with information to contact local authorities, WLUC‑TV reported. We will update this story as officials release more details.
