Shortly before midnight, gunfire on a south St. Petersburg street left one man dead and another wounded, rattling a neighborhood that has been seeing long-term drops in violent crime.
St. Petersburg police said officers arrived to the 800 block of 14th Avenue South and found two adult male victims outside. One man died at the scene, while the other was taken for treatment, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department. Detectives have opened an investigation and are working to piece together what led up to the shooting.
Tampa Bay 28 reported that police confirmed both victims were adult men and that the fatal shooting happened outdoors along the block. Officials told the station more details would be released as they become available.
Police Ask Witnesses To Come Forward
Investigators are now looking for anyone who saw or heard anything around the time of the shooting. Police urged community members to contact detectives through the department's anonymous Tip411 system or the non-emergency line.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department's Tip411 page, tips can be submitted online or by texting "SPPD" and your information to 847411. Anonymous tips are welcome, and officers stressed that even small details could help the case.
What This Means Locally
The deadly shooting comes at a time when the broader crime picture in St. Pete has been moving in the opposite direction. Bay News 9 reported in February that violent crime in the city dropped about 16% in 2025 and that the St. Petersburg Police Department recorded its lowest number of homicides in nearly six decades.
So when a late-night killing shakes a residential block, it hits a community that has been cautiously celebrating progress while still navigating the reality that one bullet can change everything.
Investigation Underway
SPPD detectives remained on scene overnight, processing evidence and following early leads. Police told Tampa Bay 28 that additional information is expected to be released later this morning. This story will be updated as officials provide new details.
Anyone with information is asked to call St. Petersburg police at 727-893-7780 (non-emergency) or dial 911 in an emergency. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Tip411, and detectives are urging neighbors to come forward.
