A late-night attempt to cross the Gulf Freeway in southeast Houston turned deadly early Monday when a man was struck and killed in the southbound main lanes, according to police.
Houston officers and paramedics were called to the scene around 12:25 a.m. near the 3500 block of the Gulf Freeway, where they found a man who had been hit by a vehicle. Southbound traffic backed up as investigators shut down lanes to document the crash scene in the overnight hours.
What investigators say happened
In a press release cited by MyTexasDaily, the Houston Police Department said a blue Dodge Avenger was driving southbound on the freeway when it struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the main lanes at about 12:25 a.m.
Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. HPD said the case is being handled by its Vehicular Crimes Division.
The driver of the Dodge, described as a 50-year-old man in the release, stayed at the scene, spoke with officers and was later released. Investigators reported that he showed no signs of intoxication.
Investigation still in motion
Houston Police Department officials said the victim’s identity will be released after the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences notifies his family.
Detectives are continuing to review evidence from the crash site and are asking anyone with information to contact the department’s Vehicular Crimes Division or its Office of Community Affairs.
A deadly stretch of freeway
The Gulf Freeway corridor has seen several deadly collisions in recent months, including multiple auto-pedestrian incidents earlier this year. Previous coverage of a deadly dash on a Gulf Freeway ramp highlighted similar concerns about people on foot trying to navigate fast-moving traffic.
Federal data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that pedestrians consistently account for a significant share of the nation’s road fatalities. A 2024 research note from NHTSA tracks recent trends in fatal crashes and nonoccupant deaths across the country.
HPD said no charges had been filed in Monday’s crash at the time of the initial report and that any updates would be released as the investigation moves forward. According to the department’s release, people with tips can reach out through the media line or contact Crime Stoppers.
