Two people were killed late Friday night in a violent crash on State Road 60 in Plant City. Investigators say a GMC Yukon hit a pedestrian just west of Horton Road, then rolled, killing both the person on foot and the driver at the scene. Troopers spent hours combing through debris and skid marks as they worked to piece together how the tragedy unfolded.
What troopers say
The Florida Highway Patrol reports the crash happened around 11:25 p.m. Friday, when a GMC Yukon heading west on SR-60 struck a 50-year-old Plant City woman who had walked into the SUV’s path. Troopers say the 20-year-old Plant City man behind the wheel tried to swerve, but the Yukon left the roadway and began to overturn, throwing the driver from the vehicle during the rollover. Both victims were pronounced dead on scene, and their names have not been released while the investigation continues, according to Tampa Free Press.
SR-60 safety work near Horton Road
This stretch of SR-60 has recently seen state safety upgrades. The Florida Department of Transportation finished a resurfacing project in May 2025 that added a directional median and sidewalks at Horton Road, according to FDOT Tampa Bay. The agency’s FY27–31 work program also includes an intersection-improvement project at SR-60 and Horton Road, with funding set aside for preliminary engineering and construction, a sign of ongoing state investment in the corridor, per the FDOT work program. The planned and completed projects are intended to cut down on conflict points and improve conditions for both pedestrians and drivers.
Investigation ongoing
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol say the case remains open, with names withheld until families can be notified. No potential contributing factors or charges have been announced. Crash investigators are expected to rely on physical evidence from the scene and other findings as they work to determine what led up to the deadly impact, according to Tampa Free Press.
