A late‑night house fire on the 3400 block of Ligonier Street in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood left four people injured early Thursday, turning a quiet stretch of row houses into a chaotic three‑alarm scene. Officials said flames spread from one home to the adjacent building, and a floor collapse triggered a mayday call as firefighters scrambled to regroup. A mother and her son were rushed to hospitals, with the son suffering burns to his face and both hands, and the mother was treated for smoke inhalation. Two firefighters were also evaluated at hospitals and were listed in stable condition.
According to CBS Pittsburgh, crews were dispatched to the 3400 block just after 12:30 a.m. Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz told the station that the son jumped from the roof to a neighboring building before firefighters reached him with a ladder truck. CBS Pittsburgh reported that the son sustained first‑degree burns to his face and second‑ and third‑degree burns to both hands, while his mother was treated for smoke inhalation. One firefighter was hospitalized with a hip injury and another was taken in for minor facial burns, and both were listed in stable condition. Cruz told the outlet that the house where the fire began is likely destroyed, and the Red Cross was assisting the displaced family while detectives from the city's Fire Investigation Unit worked to determine the cause.
What crews faced
Aerial and neighborhood video captured multiple ladder trucks and streams of water as firefighters shifted to exterior operations after the structural collapse made going inside too dangerous. Lawrenceville's tightly packed, older row houses can allow fire to move rapidly between attached units, a pattern that has shown up in earlier multi‑alarm responses in the neighborhood, as reported by WTAE.
Investigation and recovery
Investigators from the city's Fire Investigation Unit were on scene Thursday working to pinpoint how the fire started, officials told CBS Pittsburgh. The Red Cross coordinated short‑term assistance for the displaced mother and son as crews continued overhaul work. Authorities asked neighbors to steer clear of the immediate area while firefighters secured the scene and investigators combed through the debris.
