On Earth Day, the City of Knoxville literally flipped the switch on a new era at the Dr. E.V. Davidson Community Center, firing up its first solar array paired with battery storage. Mayor Indya Kincannon joined after-school students for the ceremony, celebrating a small but mighty system meant to keep the lights and programs going during brief outages and to stretch clean power use into the evening at the east Knoxville rec hub.

Ceremony And Partners

The city timed the flip for 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, and reports that Solar Alliance handled the installation with support from the Knoxville Utilities Board, whose crews were on site for the Earth Day festivities, according to a City of Knoxville news release. In that release, Mayor Indya Kincannon called the setup “a reliable, carbon-free supply of electricity” for the center and tied the project directly to Knoxville’s broader sustainability push.

Project Size And Funding

In a January announcement, Solar Alliance described a municipal recreation-center project that pairs roughly 59.5 kilowatts of rooftop solar with about 122 kilowatt-hours of battery storage, supported by a U.S. Department of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, according to the Solar Alliance press release. The company said its local affiliate handled design and construction for this and other community-focused solar-plus-storage sites around the region.

KUB And The Local Clean Energy Push

The Knoxville Utilities Board helped manage the on-site activation during the Earth Day event, and KUB points to its community solar program, launched in April 2023, as part of a larger plan to add hundreds of megawatts of local solar for customers, as outlined on its website. That effort is one piece of KUB’s strategy to match TVA-supported offerings with homegrown projects that expand access to renewables and boost resilience, KUB says.

Why Storage Matters For Neighborhoods

Patience Melnik, director of the city’s Office of Sustainability, told the city that the battery lets the community center “use renewable power in the evening, during power outages or on cloudy days,” giving programs and neighbors a steadier place to land when the grid blinks, the news release notes. City officials also highlight the project as one step toward a 2019 goal to cut municipal emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

Video And What Residents Should Know

A video of the celebration posted by the City of Knoxville on Facebook captures the ceremonial switch flip, the kids who rely on the center, and the visible presence of Solar Alliance and KUB at the event. For residents who want the more technical details or are curious about how community solar fits into Knoxville’s climate and energy targets, KUB and Solar Alliance host information on their websites, and the city directs people to its sustainability pages for ongoing updates.
