An Evolv weapons-detection unit at the main entrance of Lilburn Middle School flagged a loaded handgun in a student's backpack on Wednesday morning, and Gwinnett school police arrested the student before they reached the building's main hallways. School leaders said students and staff were never in danger and that the weapon was confiscated without incident. Principal Dr. Nicole Irish told families that the school's layered safety measures did exactly what they were supposed to do and urged parents to check backpacks each morning.
How The Detection System Cut The Threat Short
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Evolv unit identified the firearm as the student tried to walk into the school, and Gwinnett County School Police and administrators quickly confiscated the gun. The report says the student was taken into custody without incident while other students remained unaware as staff dealt with the situation at the entrance. School officials said the incident began off campus and was resolved at the checkpoint.
Administrators Credit Security, Call For Parent Backup
In a letter to families, Principal Irish wrote, "Our established security procedures worked exactly as designed," and district official Bernard Watson added, "Keeping our schools safe is a shared responsibility between families and schools," according to FOX 5 Atlanta. The message urged parents to check students' bags each morning and to report any concerns to school staff. Officials said they will continue to review safety protocols following the incident.
How This Fits Into Gwinnett's Bigger Safety Plan
Gwinnett County Public Schools has been expanding weapons-detection measures, and the district announced a plan in July 2025 to install Evolv systems in all middle and high schools, according to Gwinnett County Public Schools. The district has also piloted a clear-backpack program at select schools, including Lilburn Middle, as part of broader safety efforts, as reported by Atlanta News First.
What Parents Are Being Asked To Do Next
School officials say they will share any updates directly with families and that Gwinnett School Police handled the arrest. For now, the district is asking families to reinforce safe behavior at home and to inspect backpacks before students leave for school. Parents can also find contact information and school updates on the Lilburn Middle School website.
