A Saturday shopping trip at the Macy’s on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset ended with handcuffs instead of handbags, after a mother and daughter were arrested in what police say was an attempted grab-and-go that left a store security worker with an injured arm.

What police say

According to News12 New York, police say 60-year-old Diane Butrico and her 21-year-old daughter, Jaclyn Grillo, both from Queens, walked into the Manhasset Macy’s, picked out merchandise and tucked it into a reusable bag before trying to head out without paying.

Loss-prevention staff confronted the pair near the exit, investigators told the station. At that point, police say Grillo threatened one of the employees and shoved him to the ground, injuring his arm. The loss-prevention worker was left nursing that injury while both women were taken into custody at the scene, according to the outlet.

Where it happened

The run-in took place at the Macy’s on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset. The retailer’s official listing puts the store at 1100 Northern Blvd in Manhasset, NY. According to Macy's, the location serves shoppers in the Northern Boulevard and Americana area.

Retail theft in context

Incidents like this are landing right in the middle of a growing fight over retail theft and how aggressively to confront suspected shoplifters. The Council on Criminal Justice has reported notable increases in shoplifting in recent mid-year comparisons, adding fuel to calls for tougher enforcement.

On Long Island, officials have been trying to get ahead of the problem. Local leaders have hosted summits to coordinate law enforcement and store security strategies targeting organized retail crime, according to the South Shore Press.

Charges and next steps

Police told News12 New York that Grillo has been charged with second-degree robbery and assault on a retail worker. Butrico faces charges of fourth-degree criminal facilitation and petty larceny. Authorities did not immediately release information about their booking or arraignment.
