Chris Gallant, the 37-year-old Democratic nominee challenging Long Island Rep. Nick LaLota in New York's 1st Congressional District, is now confronting a wave of scrutiny over graphic BDSM modeling photographs that circulated online between 2011 and 2020. The images, taken during a private, consensual photo session with his then-partner, showed Gallant modeling gear for Mr. S Leather, a San Francisco-based fetish shop, according to attorney Sara Azari.
The photographs were first reported by the New York Post, which said facial recognition software matched the images to Gallant, citing an identical blemish on his left temple and a distinctive earlobe shape. The Post reported that Gallant appeared in multiple photos wearing collars, leather straps, neoprene and bondage gear, and in some images depicting hardcore sex, including one showing him fully naked and having sex with another man. He also appeared smiling in a cage and posed with muzzles and blindfolds, per the same report.
Azari, who represents Gallant and previously represented former Rep. Eric Swalwell during misconduct allegations according to NewsNation, said the photographs are authentic but stemmed from a private session during a committed four-year relationship. She said Gallant later asked Mr. S Leather to stop using the images and remove them from the company's website, a request the shop honored, though the Post noted his limited agreement with the company did not authorize unrestricted publication by third parties — and the photos later appeared on gay porn websites not apparently affiliated with the shop.
Gallant's Camp Says the Past Won't Define the Campaign
Azari insisted the images have no bearing on Gallant's record, qualifications, judgment, or ability to serve, according to the Post's report. She added that Gallant will not allow photographs from a past relationship or employment to be weaponized for political purposes. The Post also noted Gallant, who has served in the Army National Guard as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot since 2006, was previously a local union chapter leader in the National Air Traffic Controllers Association and worked as an FAA air traffic controller, and was pictured at Fire Island LGBTQ events, including the Invasion of the Pines in 2007, per the same report.
