Downtown Columbus is getting ready for a full-on takeover Saturday, May 2, when the Market Street Festival returns for its 30th run. The all-day party kicks off at 9 a.m. and will spill across the city’s historic blocks with two music stages, a children’s area, the annual classic car show, and rows of food and craft booths. Organizers say they expect thousands of visitors and have already rolled out notices on street closures and parking tweaks for the weekend.
What to expect
The festival’s official site lists Saturday, May 2, as the big day and confirms a 9 a.m. start time. Organizers are promising “over 200 arts, crafts, and food vendors” along with official 2026 festival T-shirts that can be snagged through the Main Street office, according to the Market Street Festival. Vendor application materials on the site spell out when booths can be set up, how much space costs, and what safety rules food vendors have to follow before the crowds arrive.
Music, vendors and crowd
Local coverage reports that this year’s layout includes about 152 arts-and-crafts vendors and roughly 20 food vendors. Longtime coordinator Amber Brislin, who has steered the event for nearly twenty years, told the Commercial Dispatch she is proud the tradition has continued and that Market Street “has stayed strong and grown.” Main Street Columbus Executive Director Barbara Bigelow told the paper the festival typically pulls in between 20,000 and 30,000 people.
Road closures and logistics
Organizers have posted street-closure maps and logistics details on the festival website and in vendor materials for anyone trying to plan an escape route. Those documents show vendor set-up starts on Friday, May 1 and that sections of Fourth Street and nearby parking areas will be closed to make room for vendors and the food court, per the festival packet. The packet also lays out the rules for when vehicles must be cleared out and highlights accessible routes for drop-offs and emergency access.
Car show, kids and accessibility
The festival’s annual car show is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. near Third Street South and College Street, and a children’s activity zone will be staged near Sixth and College streets, according to the local paper. Handicapped parking will be available behind St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and organizers are reminding visitors that Main Street businesses will stay open during the festivities, the Commercial Dispatch reports.
Why it matters
Market Street Festival functions as the primary fundraiser for Main Street Columbus and as a live showcase for downtown businesses and local nonprofit programs, the nonprofit’s materials note. Between vendor fees and sponsorships, proceeds help pay for downtown revitalization projects, events, and maintenance, which is why organizers lean heavily on volunteers and meticulous logistics to keep the whole operation running smoothly, per Main Street Columbus.
