Less than two weeks after a violent T-bone collision in east Medford left a 32-year-old motorcyclist with catastrophic injuries, friends and fellow riders are closing ranks around him as he starts a grueling recovery. Family members say the crash, which shut down Crater Lake Avenue on a Thursday morning, left the rider with multiple fractures and the loss of most of his left leg below the knee. A community fundraiser is now working to tackle mounting medical bills and help care for his two young children while he heals.
Crash and hospital care
According to Your Oregon News, the rider, identified by family as Dakota Greenwade, was struck in an April 2 T-bone collision at the intersection of Crater Lake Avenue and Johnson Street and was dragged more than 30 feet from the point of impact. Emergency crews first transported him to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, and he was later life-flown to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland for specialized care. Surgeons treated multiple injuries and removed part of his left leg below the knee; family members say he also suffered a punctured lung, internal bleeding and fractures to both femurs.
Fundraiser and community support
According to the campaign on GoFundMe, organizers set a $250,000 goal, and donations have already climbed into the tens of thousands as friends, fellow riders and neighbors chip in. The page describes Greenwade as a diesel mechanic, an eight-year Air Force veteran and a father of two, and notes that donations will go toward medical care, prosthetics and family expenses. The fundraiser has quickly turned into the main hub where supporters follow updates and send messages of encouragement.
Police comment and crash probe
Medford police say the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team is still working the case, and the department has told reporters that the teen driver involved has not been charged while the investigation continues, according to Medford Alert News. Local reporting also notes comments from Medford officers that the Crater Lake Avenue and Johnson Street intersection has seen multiple collisions in recent years, a concern city officials and traffic staff have flagged while weighing safety fixes. The Medford Police Department has asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has video to contact investigators.
City safety efforts on Crater Lake corridor
The City of Medford, citing traffic studies along the corridor, has in recent years targeted portions of the Crater Lake Highway area for enforcement and engineering changes. The city has said that photo enforcement at nearby intersections can create a "spillover effect" that reduces crashes at problem locations, according to the City of Medford. Those efforts, which include selective camera siting and other safety work, are part of a broader push by the police department and city staff to curb serious collisions along busy stretches of Crater Lake Avenue.
Greenwade’s partner has urged riders to wear full-face helmets and drivers to give motorcyclists an extra look, saying medical staff and family have been "blown away" by his resilience. Family members say they are bracing for a nine-to-twelve-month recovery timeline that will include additional surgeries, rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting. The fundraiser is helping cover expenses so Dakota can focus on getting stronger. For details on the fundraiser and to read updates from the family, see the campaign and local reporting linked below.
