Illinois State Police spent two nights in early April flooding parts of St. Clair and Madison counties with troopers, zeroing in on East St. Louis and nearby Metro East communities in a violent-crime suppression push. By the time the April 8–9 detail wrapped, the sweep had produced 20 arrests, roughly 30 felony counts and 12 seized firearms, officials said.
Operation results
According to the agency, the two-day detail ended with 20 arrests, 30 felony charges and 42 criminal counts total, including 19 firearm-related charges. Troopers also recovered 12 firearms during the operation. Those figures came from a news release carried by RiverBender.
Part of a wider crackdown
This was not a one-off. ISP has been running similar Metro East crackdowns for months, and they add up. A review by the Belleville News-Democrat found the agency has conducted multiple operations since mid-2023, collectively resulting in hundreds of arrests and dozens of gun seizures across St. Clair and Madison counties. Belleville News-Democrat documented that pattern.
Notable stops and who joined in
Among the incidents ISP highlighted, troopers reported a traffic stop on April 8 near Falling Springs Road and Nickel Road in Cahokia Heights. A probable-cause search turned up a firearm and suspected cannabis, and both occupants were interviewed.
The next day, on April 9, a separate stop near 60th Street and State Street in East St. Louis led to the discovery of a firearm, suspected cannabis and drug paraphernalia, with charges still pending in both cases.
ISP said units from across Illinois, including Troop 8 patrol, Fatal 4 South, the Zone 6 Firearms Investigations Unit, the Public Safety Enforcement Group, Crime Scene Services, ISP SWAT and Air Operations, assisted SAVE South, while the FBI and the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southern Illinois also provided support, according to the release, as reported by RiverBender.
What comes next
Officials said many charges are still pending while investigations continue. The agency added it plans to keep leaning on air operations, investigative technology, forensic services and stepped-up patrols in the Metro East, with multiple ISP units working together on future details. That emphasis on multi-unit enforcement has been a recurring theme in ISP statements about its work in the region. Illinois State Police.
Legal note
The arrests reported by ISP are preliminary, and any formal charges will come from local prosecutors, who must review the evidence before seeking indictments or filing cases in court. Defendants are presumed innocent until charged and proven guilty in court.
