A 57-year-old Bradenton man died early yesterday after losing control of his motorcycle on U.S. Highway 19 west of Hightower Road, according to troopers. The bike went onto the shoulder, overturned and threw the rider into the roadway, where he was later struck by an SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and emergency crews shut down lanes while investigators worked the crash site.

What Troopers Say Happened

According to Tampa Bay 28, which cites a Florida Highway Patrol news release, the crash happened around midnight in the left eastbound lane when the rider lost control. After the motorcycle overturned, the motorcyclist, identified only by his age and city, was ejected and landed in the roadway. An SUV driven by a 39-year-old St. Petersburg man then struck him, officials said. Troopers say the crash remains under investigation.

U.S. 19 Safety Efforts in the Spotlight

The collision took place on a stretch of U.S. 19 that state and regional agencies have already flagged for safety upgrades. The Florida Department of Transportation's FY26–30 work program lists resurfacing and traffic-operation projects on portions of U.S. 19, and the Sarasota/Manatee MPO has highlighted Destination Zero safety initiatives in planning updates and public meetings. Planners have discussed measures such as directional medians and pedestrian refuges to reduce conflict points and left-turn related crashes.

Investigation Still Active

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are leading the investigation and have not released any additional details about the rider's identity. Officials say the crash remains under review and have asked anyone with information to contact FHP.
