Mill Avenue is about to get its name up in lights in a very literal way. On Monday, April 20, Tempe crews are scheduled to hoist a massive gateway spelling out "MILL AVE" over the downtown stretch of the street, capping off years of work on the city's long-running streetscape overhaul.
The letters will hang roughly 20 feet above the roadway, creating a marquee-style entrance that will be hard to miss for drivers and Arizona State University pedestrians moving through the district. The work is slated for the early morning, with a short closure while the sign is lifted into position.
Installation details
According to KTAR 92.3 FM, the new gateway spans about 94.5 feet across Mill Avenue and tips the scales at roughly 36,300 pounds. Each letter stands more than four feet tall, suspended on catenary cables about 20 feet above the street, and the sign is internally lit so it will glow over downtown at night. KTAR notes the display was fabricated by Arizona-based firm Spectacle.
Schedule and closures
City documents show that crews will close Mill Avenue between University Drive and Seventh Street early Monday for the hanging operation, with a work window listed from 5 a.m. to noon. Streetcar service will be limited during the installation, and motorists and riders should be ready for temporary detours and delays, according to the City of Tempe.
The city already staged a brief closure earlier this month to set the pylons at each end of the crossing, so this is the main event. Businesses along the route are being asked to follow posted signage and access instructions while crews complete the hoist.
Part of the Downtown Tempe Refresh
The gateway is one of the final showpiece elements of the Downtown Tempe Refresh, which city officials describe as the first full streetscape renovation in the district in more than 40 years, according to the City of Tempe. The broader project has added more than 100 trees, refurbished the familiar red brick sidewalks, and upgraded electrical, irrigation and lighting systems throughout the core.
That work is expected to continue through April 2026. City leaders say the new sign is meant to help brand the area as Tempe courts new development and growing waves of visitors.

In a statement to the City of Tempe, Mayor Corey Woods called Mill Avenue "a global destination" that "plays a noteworthy part in the history of our city." He said the gateway is designed to honor that role for residents and visitors who see Mill as Tempe's front door.
