A Sunday morning custody pickup in Nanakuli turned into a gun scare when, according to Honolulu police, a 76-year-old man allegedly fired a handgun at a 44-year-old man outside a home. The younger man, who had gone to the residence to pick up his daughter, escaped with only minor abrasions and was treated at the scene by medical responders. Witnesses quickly intervened, wrestled the weapon away, and held the suspect until officers arrived. Police say their investigation is still underway.
What police say
Honolulu Police Department officers responded to a report of gunfire on Nanakuli Avenue and say the 76-year-old allegedly discharged a firearm at the 44-year-old but missed, according to KITV Island News. The outlet reports that a witness managed to wrestle the gun away from the suspect, who was then arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the second degree and reckless endangering in the first degree. Medics evaluated the injured man at the scene and did not immediately take him to a major trauma center, HPD told the station.
West Oʻahu context
Nanakuli and other neighborhoods along the Waiʻanae Coast have been rattled by repeated shootings in recent years, including a beach parking lot attack last September that left a teenager brain-dead and led to multiple arrests, as reported by Hawaii News Now. In the wake of those incidents, community members and local leaders have kept up calls for more prevention efforts, expanded youth programs, and additional police resources on the Westside.
Charges and next steps
The 76-year-old now faces counts including attempted murder in the second degree and reckless endangering in the first degree, and detectives say the case remains active, per KITV Island News. Police had not released the suspect's name or booking details in the station's report, and the case will be forwarded to the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney for review.
