A New Orleans man who bolted from jail in a headline-grabbing escape last year has now been convicted of second-degree murder in a 2021 broad-daylight shooting on Chef Menteur Highway that killed Aurrel Brown. A jury on Wednesday found Lenton Vanburen guilty, capping a multi-year investigation that has kept New Orleans East residents watching the courts and the jail with equal intensity.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams laid out the case at a Wednesday news conference, according to WGNO. Prosecutors told jurors they leaned on a mix of witness testimony and forensic evidence, arguing it was strong enough to convince the panel beyond a reasonable doubt that Vanburen was responsible for Brown's killing.
The Shooting
The fatal shooting unfolded in November 2021 on the 9700 block of Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans East, where authorities later identified the victim as 34-year-old Aurrel Brown, according to reporting from the time. Early coverage documented a daytime crime scene and a developing investigation that would eventually lead to the charges that landed in court. Investigators and prosecutors say those initial records, along with later testimony, formed the backbone of the murder case.
Escape And Recapture
Before the trial wrapped, Vanburen already had his name in the headlines for a different reason. He was one of 10 men who tunneled out of the Orleans Parish Justice Center in May 2025 through a hole cut in a cell wall behind a toilet, a jailbreak that set off criminal probes and sharp criticism of how the facility is run, according to WDSU. Authorities said he was tracked down in Baton Rouge about 10 days later and taken back into custody, per WAFB. The escape and quick recapture helped fuel fresh scrutiny of staffing levels and security procedures at the jail.
What Comes Next
Eight of the 10 recaptured inmates now have trial dates this fall on escape-related charges, and prosecutors say they are not easing up on either the 2021 homicide or the 2025 breakout, according to WGNO. Defense attorneys, for their part, may explore post-trial challenges and appeals. Sentencing, future hearings and any new filings will dictate how quickly Vanburen's case moves through the rest of the criminal justice system.
