A 40-year-old Newnan man is facing stalking and simple assault charges after deputies say he tailed four teenage girls for several miles, only to be confronted by homeowners at a house on Hamilton Road. The encounter turned into a physical struggle, and the suspect was later arrested in Alabama before being booked into the Troup County Jail.
What deputies say
According to Troup County deputies, the incident started on April 11 when the teens left a nearby business and headed to a home on Hamilton Road. Homeowners told deputies they noticed a man following the girls’ vehicle, confronted him in the driveway, and a struggle broke out that left the man injured. The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as 40-year-old Marshall Phillip Taylor, per FOX 5 Atlanta.
Arrest and charges
Officers in Valley, Alabama, later took Taylor into custody on April 15. He was then transported and booked into the Troup County Jail on stalking and simple assault charges. Those booking details and charges were reported by Atlanta News First.
Investigators ask for tips
Investigators say they are concerned there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. They are asking anyone who has had a similar encounter to contact Investigator James Robson at 706-883-1616. That appeal for tips, along with the sheriff’s office account of the incident, was shared with local outlets, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
What the charges mean
Under Georgia law, stalking is defined as a course of conduct that causes another person to fear for their safety and is generally charged as a misdemeanor under O.C.G.A. § 16-5-90. Simple assault, the second charge in this case, is typically a misdemeanor under O.C.G.A. § 16-5-20, although penalties can increase when aggravating factors or prior convictions are involved.
