A Taft High School administrator was bitten by a Northside ISD Police Department K-9 on Tuesday while the dog was on campus for an unannounced search, district officials confirmed. The bite happened around 11:45 a.m. in the campus office area, and the administrator, a woman, was taken to a local hospital for further treatment. The district said no students were involved in the incident.
As first reported by KSAT, a district spokesperson told the station the K-9 was conducting an unannounced search on campus when the bite occurred. According to KSAT, the San Antonio Fire Department said the administrator was transported to a nearby hospital and that her condition had not been released.
Northside's K-9 Program On Campus
Northside's safety information notes the district runs its own police department, which includes K-9 officers and a dedicated K-9 officer assigned to campus safety and drug-prevention work. According to Northside ISD, K-9 teams are a visible presence at high schools and middle schools and are listed as part of the district's broader safety resources, alongside access-control technology and campus threat-assessment teams.
How K-9 Deployments Can Go Sideways
Police and safety experts say that while K-9s are trained for detection and apprehension, bites can still occur in fast-moving situations, and departments typically review deployments and training any time an incident like this happens. Regional reporting has documented cases where K-9 bites triggered internal reviews and temporary administrative actions, including a recent Bay Area incident covered by KQED. For local context on animal bites more generally, KSAT reported an increase in confirmed bite cases and dangerous-dog affidavits in San Antonio last year.
What Parents And Staff Should Know
Parents and staff with immediate safety concerns are advised to call 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, Northside offers an anonymous Safeline tip line, and campus contact information is listed on Taft High's page. According to Northside ISD, Safeline can be reached at 397-SAFE (7233), and the district lists the Taft campus administrative contact details, along with the main switchboard number, on its website for media or parental inquiries.
Officials have not released any additional public details about Tuesday's incident and say they will update the community as more information becomes available. We will update this story when officials release confirmed information.
