A Monday night emergency call on San Antonio's Northwest Side ended with flashing lights for a different reason when a pickup truck slammed into a police cruiser, leaving both drivers with minor injuries and one of them holding a fresh traffic ticket.
The crash happened just after 10 p.m. near Fredericksburg Road and Williamsburg Place as the officer was responding to an overdose report, according to police. Both the officer and the pickup driver were treated for minor injuries, and officers at the scene cited the pickup driver while keeping the investigation open.
Officer Was En Route To Overdose Call, Police Say
According to KENS5, the officer was driving to an overdose call when the patrol vehicle was hit by a pickup exiting a driveway. The station reports the woman behind the wheel of the truck stayed at the scene, was cited for a traffic violation and watched as medics treated the officer, who is expected to recover.
T-Bone Collision Snarls Fredericksburg Road Traffic
As reported by KSAT, preliminary details from SAPD indicate the pickup T-boned the patrol unit while pulling out of a private driveway at Fredericksburg Road and Williamsburg Place. The collision briefly slowed traffic along the busy corridor while crews cleared the scene and checked on both drivers, who suffered only minor injuries.
How SAPD Handles Crashes Involving Patrol Units
According to the San Antonio Police Department, supervisors are tasked with investigating any crash involving a police vehicle and must complete a Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report (TxDOT CR-3). The policy directs investigators to gather vehicle data, message logs and any available video, all of which will shape the department's review of Monday night's collision.
Why It Matters
Crashes involving emergency vehicles highlight the risks that come with racing to urgent calls, even for seasoned officers. A similar SAPD wreck that injured an officer was reported by KSAT last November. In cases like this, investigators typically look at whether drivers failed to yield or misjudged an oncoming unit, with citations or additional charges possible depending on what the evidence shows.
In a statement to KENS5, SAPD said the investigation into Monday's crash remains active and that officials plan to release more information as it becomes available. Anyone with dash-cam or security footage of the collision is being urged to contact investigators.
