A late-night fight in Pittsburgh's Perry South neighborhood ended with a man stabbed in the head and a SWAT team surrounding a nearby home that turned out to be empty, authorities say.
Officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Thursday to the 2100 block of Federal Street for reports of a fight and a stabbing. Police say the injured man later made his way to an EMS station, where responders got him to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition, according to officials.
Police account of the attack
Pittsburgh police say two men allegedly attacked another man with a baseball bat, then stabbed him in the head, after the fight broke out on Federal Street around 9:30 p.m., according to WTAE. The station reports the victim went to an EMS station on his own before being taken to a hospital. Police have not released the names of the victim or the suspected attackers.
Where this happened
Perry South, also known locally as Perry Hilltop, sits on Pittsburgh’s North Side and is mostly residential, with Federal Street connecting to Perrysville Avenue up the hill, according to Wikipedia. The 2100 blocks of Federal Street and Koerner Avenue sit inside that grid of rowhouses and small neighborhood businesses.
SWAT search and recent context
After the stabbing, officers brought in SWAT to the 2100 block of Koerner Avenue to search a home where they believed the two suspects might be hiding. The house was cleared, and no one was found inside. Investigators say the case remains active, WTAE reports.
The deployment comes on the heels of another Perry South SWAT scene in October, when negotiators and tactical officers surrounded a Daisy Street home during a barricade situation that ended with two people taken into custody, according to WPXI.
Pittsburgh police say they are still piecing together what led to the attack and are asking anyone with information or video to contact investigators. No arrests have been announced. This story will be updated as new details are released.
