Morning readings at Phoenix Sky Harbor hovered near 68°F today, but the Valley will not stay cool for long, with highs expected to surge to around 95°F. East-southeast breezes will strengthen through the morning, and those gusts could turn outdoor chairs, patio umbrellas and light signage into projectiles, so plan activities and secure loose items ahead of time.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory in effect through 1 p.m. MST today. East-southeast winds of 5–15 mph will gust 20–35 mph across the lower deserts and 40–50 mph over foothills and higher terrain, especially northeast of Phoenix. Localized blowing or lofted dust is possible along and east of the I-10 corridor, including parts of Maricopa and Pinal counties, which can reduce visibility on open stretches of highway, according to NWS Phoenix.
Heat Through Early Week
Temperatures will stay well above normal through Tuesday, with highs near 95°F today, tomorrow, and on Tuesday, before a cooler trend begins midweek and brings highs closer to the mid-80s on Wednesday, April 22. For more on the pattern and earlier expectations, see the earlier outlook.
Commute, Dust And Fire Weather
Morning gusts and any dust pockets could slow commutes on I-10 and other open highways, so if visibility drops, pull well off the road and wait for conditions to improve. Humidity will remain low this week and elevated fire-weather conditions are possible, so secure yard debris, avoid open burning and keep an eye on anything that could blow around. The City of Phoenix maintains a Heat Relief Network of cooling centers and hydration sites for anyone needing a break from the heat, and residents are encouraged to check local resources before heading out via the City of Phoenix cooling centers page.
