The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon’s 26.2-mile field is officially tapped out. Organizers announced Wednesday that the full-distance race has sold out, just as Pittsburgh gets ready for what could be the biggest Marathon Weekend in the event’s history. P3R is projecting more than 50,000 participants across races, family events, and the Live Well Expo on the first weekend of May, and neighborhoods along the course are already bracing for crowds, road closures, and a whole lot of cowbells.
As reported by WPXI, race organizers P3R said more than 50,000 people are expected to take part in Marathon Weekend festivities. The station noted that P3R CEO Troy Schooley credited “record participation” to both the growth of running in the region and the reputation the event has built over time. WPXI also reported that a waitlist is in place for hopefuls trying to snag a last-minute slot in the sold-out full marathon.
Events still accepting registrations
If you dragged your feet on the marathon signup, all is not lost. While the 26.2-mile field has hit capacity, several other events are still open, according to Race Roster registration notices. Available options include the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon and its walking division, the KeyBank | UPMC Health Plan BACK Half Marathon, the FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay for teams of two to five, and the GNC Pittsburgh 4-Mile Fitness Challenge.
There is also a full slate of family-friendly races on the calendar for Saturday, May 2. The lineup features the UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K, the U.S. Steel Pittsburgh Champions Mile, the Chick-fil-A Kids Marathon, the Sheetz Toddler Trot, and the Pittsburgh Pet Walk, with the marquee marathon still set for Sunday, May 3. For locals and visitors who missed out on a marathon bib but still want in on the action, those shorter Saturday events offer a way to be part of the weekend without running the whole 26.2.
Packet pickup, dates and logistics
Packet pickup and the Pittsburgh Live Well Expo are hosted at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, with expo hours and specific pickup windows listed on the official race website. The expo opens Friday, May 1, and continues on Saturday, May 2. Organizers recommend that Sunday racers show up early and note the will-call options for runners who cannot make it during regular expo hours.
Race officials also publish course maps, shuttle details, and street-closure notices for anyone planning to navigate downtown during Marathon Weekend. Residents, workers, and visitors are encouraged to check the official expo and race pages for the latest transportation guidance before they find themselves stuck on the wrong side of a barricade.
Why it matters
P3R and VisitPITTSBURGH describe Marathon Weekend as a major tourism and fundraising engine for the region, linking neighborhood activities with citywide promotions and charity campaigns. In a recent update, P3R noted that the weekend is expected to draw tens of thousands and will feature special activations tied to America’s 250th birthday. Local businesses typically prep for a surge in hotel bookings and on-the-ground foot traffic as runners and their cheering sections spill into restaurants, bars, and shops.
For would-be marathoners who got shut out of the full race, organizers suggest joining the waitlist and eyeing the Saturday events as backup plans. With that many people converging on the city, just being part of the scene may feel like a workout of its own.
