A quiet Sunday night in Plaza Midwood turned chaotic when a large tree crashed onto two parked cars, pinning one person inside and sending them to the hospital with serious injuries. Multiple Charlotte Fire units and EMS crews rushed to the 1200 block of Clement Avenue, worked to stabilize the scene, then freed the trapped occupant through an extrication before transferring the patient to medical care.
Rescue and extrication
According to the Charlotte Fire Department, crews first stabilized both the vehicle and the fallen tree before starting extrication. The department reported that the occupant of the first vehicle had already gotten out safely, while the person in the second car was pinned when firefighters arrived. Crews freed that individual at about 8:18 p.m., and the patient was taken from the scene with serious injuries.
EMS response and injuries
According to WSOC, Mecklenburg EMS (MEDIC) responded to the 1200 block of Clement Avenue around 8 p.m. and confirmed that one patient was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The station reported that officials did not immediately release any additional details as emergency crews remained on scene to secure the area after the rescue.
Why trees fail in storms
Plaza Midwood is known for its mature tree canopy, a neighborhood asset that can turn risky when roots or branches are weakened by rot, disease, or invasive vines. As WFAE reported, heavy rain and strong winds often expose those weak points and can trigger sudden failures. Even with routine maintenance, older trees sometimes come down during rough weather.
Who maintains street trees and how to report hazards
Public trees in the street right of way fall under the Charlotte Tree Ordinance and the city's tree management program. Per the City of Charlotte, residents can report downed or hazardous trees through 311 or the online service portal. Neighbors are urged to avoid standing or parking under damaged limbs and to alert authorities if they notice obvious structural problems.
Photos shared by the Charlotte Fire Department show firefighters working around the crushed vehicle and the downed tree as they complete the rescue. Local outlets report that authorities have released only limited information so far. As WSOC noted, officials had not provided further details at the time of reporting. This story will be updated if fire or EMS agencies release additional information.
