Before sunrise Monday, a masked gunman walked into the Mega Arcade on U.S. 41 South in Bradenton and turned a quiet early-morning scene into chaos, according to deputies. Investigators say the suspect came in shortly after 5:45 a.m. and demanded cash from customers inside.
One man reportedly refused to hand over his money. Deputies say the robber and the customer began to struggle, and the gunman opened fire, shooting the victim several times at close range. The man was rushed to an area hospital and underwent surgery, WTSP reported.
According to FOX 13, when the gunman demanded more money, the arcade manager ducked into an office, grabbed a gun and fired a single shot toward the suspect as he bolted from the business. Deputies say the round did not stop the robber, who took off on foot.
Investigators described the suspect as a Black man about 6 feet tall who left the scene on foot, according to FOX 13. No arrests had been announced as detectives canvassed the surrounding area, pulled surveillance footage and worked through witness accounts.
Deputies urged anyone with information to call the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office tip line at (941) 747-3011 or contact Crime Stoppers at (866) 634-TIPS, as noted by WTSP. Anonymous tips are welcome.
Why Arcades Can Become Targets
Deputies and county officials have long kept an eye on unauthorized gaming arcades, which sometimes hold substantial amounts of cash overnight and can quietly attract criminal attention after hours. That cash-heavy setup is part of why these businesses become tempting targets, according to reporting from WWSB / MySuncoast.
In past stings, investigators in Bradenton have seized gaming machines and cash and pushed county leaders to consider stricter local rules on these operations. Those enforcement efforts are the broader backdrop to what played out at Mega Arcade on Monday morning.
“He came in here with a purpose,” Manatee County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Randy Warren said, describing how the suspect targeted customers for cash, according to FOX 13. Deputies are asking neighbors and drivers in the area to review any doorbell or dashcam video and call in tips that might help them put a name to the masked gunman.
