An early-morning structure fire turned the commute toward Jacksonville’s Southside into a headache on Friday, shutting down all eastbound lanes of Beach Boulevard between Ryar Road and Dean Road. Fire crews focused on a commercial building that officials say appears to be a medical clinic, while drivers scrambled for alternate routes during the rush.
The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department said it was dispatched around 5:27 a.m. and had the blaze under control by about 5:50 a.m., according to Action News Jax. Officials did not immediately provide a cause of the fire or a detailed assessment of how badly the building was damaged.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed that eastbound lanes were closed from Ryar Road to Dean Road and said the shutdown would last an unknown amount of time. The blaze was in the 6400 block of Beach Boulevard and there were no reported transports, per News4Jax. Crews stayed on scene to knock down hot spots and shield neighboring businesses from any spread. Drivers were urged to steer clear while emergency workers wrapped up operations.
Traffic and response
Authorities asked motorists to avoid the affected stretch of Beach Boulevard while firefighters secured the area and cleared debris. The Florida Department of Transportation had not released an estimated time for reopening, and officials reminded drivers to give emergency vehicles plenty of room to work, as noted by Action News Jax.
Why this matters
Beach Boulevard is one of Jacksonville’s busiest east‑west corridors, and incidents like this can quickly snowball into major backups, including a fatal crash that shut westbound lanes earlier this year. Motorists are encouraged to keep an eye on official traffic feeds for the latest updates as crews finish their work.
