A motorcyclist was killed today in a crash on northbound Interstate 805 at Murray Ridge, shutting down the freeway and snarling the morning commute for San Diego drivers. The collision was reported just before 5 AM, and emergency crews immediately closed the northbound lanes while they secured the scene and began their investigation. Traffic was pushed onto nearby routes as the closure took hold.
According to 10News, the California Highway Patrol issued a SIG alert at the I-805 and Murray Ridge interchange shortly after the crash and initially shut down all northbound lanes. About an hour after the call, lanes 4 and 5 were reopened, while lanes 1 through 3 stayed closed for investigators and cleanup crews. During the partial shutdown, traffic was diverted to Interstate 8 as tow trucks and officers worked to clear the wreckage.
Traffic Ripple Effects
Any major closure on the 805 can ripple across central San Diego, especially during the morning rush. Backups often spill onto Mission Valley surface streets and neighboring freeways, where even minor slowdowns can quickly stack up. A big-rig fire on March 3 that shut down sections of I-805 for hours showed just how long those traffic headaches can linger, NBC 7 San Diego reported. Drivers on Thursday were urged to give themselves extra time and consider alternate routes while investigators finished their work.
Investigation Underway
The California Highway Patrol is investigating what led up to the deadly crash and has not yet released additional details about the motorcyclist or the circumstances of the collision, per 10News. The case remains active, and authorities are expected to release more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, motorists can keep an eye on CHP traffic alerts and local news outlets for the latest updates on freeway conditions.
