A pre-dawn two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 50 near Glenbrook shut the highway in both directions Sunday morning, leaving one person dead and three others with serious injuries. Emergency crews remained on scene for hours while Nevada Highway Patrol investigators collected evidence and worked the wreck. The closure hit the busy east shore corridor between State Route 28 and Glenbrook Road, tying up traffic to and from Lake Tahoe as officials urged drivers to stay away until the highway could be reopened.
What Happened
The Nevada Highway Patrol said the crash was reported at about 4:47 a.m. and involved two vehicles, with one person killed and three others transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to KOLO. The agency is investigating the collision.
Road Closures and Alternate Routes
U.S. 50 was closed in both directions between State Route 28 and Glenbrook Road, and the shutdown was expected to last three to four hours, per Carson Now. The Nevada State Police issued a traffic alert on Facebook asking drivers to avoid the area while crews cleared the wreckage and conducted their investigation; the agency’s advisory is posted on Nevada State Police.
Rescue Response and Investigation
Tahoe-Douglas firefighters had to extricate at least one person from the wreckage, and at least one victim was flown from the scene, according to the Record-Courier. The Record-Courier also reported heavier traffic on Kingsbury Grade and routes through Carson Valley as drivers hunted for alternate ways around the closure, and noted that NHP had not yet released the identities of those involved or a cause of the crash.
What Drivers Should Know
Investigators remained at the scene into the morning, and the Nevada Highway Patrol logged the wreck as crash number 260401270, according to KOLO. Drivers should anticipate lingering delays around the Glenbrook corridor and check local traffic reports and state road-condition resources before heading to or from Lake Tahoe.
