What started as an ordinary Thursday night drive in north Houston ended in a burst of gunfire, leaving a man in his 30s dead after he was shot multiple times while sitting in his car, police said.
Witnesses told investigators that a person pulled up in an SUV near the intersection of Laura Koppe Road and Bertwood Street, stepped out with what appeared to be a rifle, and opened fire on the parked vehicle. The wounded driver was rushed to a hospital, where he later died, according to police.
Officers with the Houston Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at about 9 p.m. in the area, according to Click2Houston. When officers arrived, they found the victim shot several times inside his vehicle, consistent with what nearby witnesses had described.
Police Seek Witnesses and Video
Houston Police homicide detectives quickly opened an investigation and began canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage, according to the Houston Police Department's news releases. No arrests had been announced as of late Thursday night.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or to remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. Detectives say they plan to review any available camera footage from nearby homes and businesses and to re-interview witnesses as they work to pin down who was behind the wheel of that SUV and who pulled the trigger.
Troubled Stretch of Road
The killing is the latest in a string of violent incidents along Laura Koppe Road in recent months. In late March, a fatal apartment shooting on the corridor was reported, and FOX 26 documented a deadly drive-by shooting at a block party there in 2024.
Neighbors have repeatedly complained about late-night activity and violence along that stretch of road, and officials say those concerns have prompted periodic enforcement efforts in the area. The continuing series of incidents has left some residents on edge as detectives work yet another homicide case on the same corridor.
What Happens Next
Investigators are expected to continue processing the scene, collect any nearby surveillance video, and keep talking with witnesses as the Homicide Division builds its case. Witness accounts that someone in an SUV got out with a rifle and fired into the parked car have been shared with detectives and detailed in the Houston Police Department's news releases.
For now, police are banking on more witnesses and camera footage to help turn a late-night ambush into a solvable case.
